About Dr. Morton

Dr. Carla Morton grew up in southwestern Virginia in a middle-class family and it a product of public schools.  She became the first college graduate in her family, receiving a Bachelor of Music Therapy degree from Radford University.  After working a few years providing mental health services, Dr. Morton completed her Master’s and PhD degrees in Clinical Psychology at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.  She then completed a Neuropsychology internship at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center as well as a postdoctoral fellowship in Pediatric Neuropsychology at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  Dr. Morton has worked as a staff neuropsychologist at a children’s hospital in Fort Worth since 2011.

Dr. Morton’s children attend elementary school in the Fort Worth ISD, and her 9-year-old son is in the gifted and talented program.  Her 11-year-old son survived a perinatal stroke, and he has received special education services since 3 years of age. Because of her experiences with her patients as well as her own son, Dr. Morton has become a passionate advocate for special education, and she helped create a Special Education PTA in the Fort Worth ISD.  She was selected as a public education policy fellow through Leadership ISD for the 2017-2018 school year. In January 2019, Dr. Morton completed the Lone Star Governance training for school board members offered through the Texas Education Agency.

In March 2018, Dr. Morton was elected to be the democratic nominee for the District 11 position on the Texas State Board of Education.  Although she did not win the election, she received over 258,000 votes.

Dr. Morton lives in the Tanglewood neighborhood in southwest Fort Worth. Her husband works as an airline fleet service clerk and is a member of the Transport Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO.  In addition to their two sons, the Morton family includes three dogs – Salty, Toby, and Emily. Dr. Morton and her sons are also active members of the Fort Worth Judo Club.
